Zero-Rated GST starting today, what does this mean for you and your business?

Zero-Rated GST starting today, what does this mean for you and your business?

From today on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be zero-rated. The GST is an added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. This week Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed that the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will replace the GST from 1st September onwards. What does this mean for your business and yourself as a consumer?

Zero-Rated GST 0%

Instead of the total removal of GST, the receipts show 0% GST. In short: consumers are given the opportunity to buy goods at a lower price from 1 June until the 1 September. What does the exclusion of the GST mean for your business: double check your invoices! Every invoice you send out or receive should show 0% GST. When it doesn’t, contact the party you are involved with to solve this. The government set out the frequently asked questions to answer your questions more in depth.

SST from 1st of September

After a period of lower prices; the SST will be reintroduced. The SST is implemented since 1970s and has gone through some improvements ever since. SST refers to Sales Tax and Services Tax. Sales tax is levied on local manufactured and imported goods, while service tax is a tax imposed on prescribed services. Meaning it depends on the goods whether you are affected as a consumer or not.

Important note here! This is the SST as we knew it, there is no confirmation yet that the SST will remain the same. Moreover, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad still has to decide the percentage of the SST which may vary between 5% - 10 %.
