Relate Malaysia’s “Bengkel Depression: Let’s Talk”

On July 8th 2017, Relate Malaysia along with MBPJ organized “Bengkel Depression: Let’s Talk” at the Community Library in Petaling Jaya.

The talk was conducted by Dr. Chua Sook Ning, a clinical psychologist who founded Relate Malaysia, an organization that aims to provide a platform to increase awareness of the importance of mental health, decrease the stigma of mental illness and develop accessible and affordable mental health interventions.

Dr. Chua provided a comprehensive session on the symptoms of depression which include low mood, a lack of appetite, insomnia, and even hypersomnia also highlighted the severity of depression. In Malaysia alone, 1 in 10 Malaysians are susceptible to depressive symptoms and that ratio is equivalent to someone having the common flu.

The most important highlight of the talk was letting people know that there are so many resources available to them, Relate Malaysia being one of them.

Recently launched on 8th July 2017, Relate Therapy offers online psychotherapy sessions for only RM 30. These 50-minute sessions are highly affordable and accessible as long as you have a stable internet connection. Online therapy can be useful for those who go through the daily grind of working from 9-5 and who may find it troublesome to drive and find time for a face-to-face therapy session.

Aside from online psychotherapy, Relate Malaysia also offers talks to corporations to raise awareness on mental health at work.

Depression in the workplace is not an issue that’s been unheard of partially due to the stress one may feel at work. If you’ve been experiencing the Monday blues every single day for two consecutive weeks and is unable to focus at work, you may have the tell-tale signs of depression.
